Developed by Square Enix, the Final Fantasy series is one of the longest running JRPG (Japanese Role Playing Game) series of all time. Today, the series has had 15 main titles released with countless spin-offs, remakes, and sequels.
Arguably a golden age of console RPGs in The West came in the late 90’s to early 2000’s, with an influx of JRPGs gaining strong popularity among Western gamers. However, the game that has received the most amount of critical acclaim and hype is none other than Final Fantasy 7, a game which received a feature length film adaptation (Final Fantasy 7 Advent Children) in 2005.
Following their success with Final Fantasy 7, Square Enix released Final Fantasy 8 in 1999, just two years after the release of FF7. While not as well-received as FF7, FF8 was the first game in the series to go for realism with their character designs. However, whether or not they were successful in their ambitions is up for debate, as they were greatly limited by the power of the Playstation 1 at the time. Nevertheless, the game had a great story and beautifully animated cut scenes.
Today, we pit these two classic RPGs together and judge them based on: story, characters, gameplay, and graphics & audio.
